The Greatest Gift

God’s Great Gifts

From Max Lucado

Why did He do it? A shack would have sufficed, but He gave us a mansion. Did He have to give the birds a song and the mountains a peak? Was He required to put stripes on the zebra and the hump on the camel?

Why wrap creation in such splendor? Why go to such trouble to give such gifts?

Why do you? You do the same. I’ve seen you searching for a gift. I’ve seen you stalking the malls and walking the aisles. I’m not talking about the obligatory gifts. I’m talking about that extra-special person and that extra-special gift. Why do you do it? You do it so the heart will stop. You do it so the jaw will drop. You do it to hear those words of disbelief “You did this for me?”

That’s why you do it. And that is why God did it. Next time a sunrise steals your breath or a meadow of flowers leaves you speechless, remain that way. Say nothing and listen as heaven whispers, “Do you like it? I did it just for you.”

~ The Great House of God

Changing Lives!!

All my life I have wanted to be a doctor. When I became a Doctor of Chiropractic in 2008, I entered into my calling as a healer and the past decade has been tremendously rewarding. However, in 2017, I was frustrated with not seeing patients get 100% well. I understood that health was a journey, but I didn’t like seeing patients with various symptoms being thrown on medications with no expectation of being taken off of them in the future. This frustration led me to look into further training so that I could provide alternative solutions to a variety of ailments.

Enter Nutrition Response Testing.

Dear colleagues of mine had been using Nutrition Response Training in their practice for over 5 years and were seeing miracles in their practice weekly; babies with seizures no longer needing medication, adults with hopeless autoimmune cases decreasing pain and increasing energy, and healing the skin of kids with years of eczema, to name a few. I knew it was time to bring this technology to my clients.

Fast forward to December 7th of this year, and I was blessed to graduate from Nutrition Response Testing Advanced Practitioner Training. After 12 trips to Clearwater, 300 hours of class work and 2 years of clinical training helping patients in our office every day, I am excited to announce my certification!

What does this mean for you and your family? It means that you can expect more out of Crossroads Family Chiropractic. It means we can serve you beyond low back pain and headaches. If you are struggling with any health complaints, or simply know that you are not functioning at optimum, then ask for help!

Here is a short list of symptoms that I have been able to help clients alleviate over the past 2 years

Headaches                                       Diarrhea                                        ADD/ADHD symptoms

Acid reflux                                       Hormone imbalance                  Poor sleep

Constipation                                    Type 2 diabetes                           Skin rash/eczema

Rheumatoid Arthritis                    Hashimoto’s                                Menstrual irregularity

Infertility                                         Seasonal allergies                        AND SO MUCH MORE!!!

You see, Nutrition Response Testing isn’t about me diagnosing and healing you. It’s about trusting that your body is meant to be healthy, and given the right conditions it will function optimally. I know that God’s promise in John 10:10 “…to give life with joy and abundance” holds true. I am blessed to have a tool to help reveal his goodness to us.

Nutrition Response testing allows us to find out what is putting stress on your body (food sensitivities, immune challenges, heavy metals and/or chemicals). Once we determine that, we can provide it with the whole food supplements (with no side effects!!) that will support your body during the stress and provide the nuts and bolts to fight the stressor naturally. This gets rid of symptoms and allows your body to start functioning optimally, so that you can live the life you have been called to live!

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to start the new year with knowing that your body isn’t hurting because it is faulty. Instead, understand that a symptom is your body’s way of communicating with you that something needs to change. Let me help you determine what that something is! Join us for our free Nutrition Response Testing workshops in January to find out how 2020 will be your year of true healing!

Determining Your New Year Detox

I love this time of year! It’s such a sweet season of togetherness. Yet, I’ve learned as a general rule that wherever there is fellowship and festivities, food is not far behind! The abundance of delicious fare is a wonderful part of the holiday season, however it has a way of leaving many of us eager for some form of detoxification by the time the New Year rolls around. Yet, there are some important things to know before diving head-first into a detox this new year!

First, lets clarify – What is detoxification?

Detoxification is the body’s internal cleansing process. The innate process of detoxification happens naturally and continually, and it involves 6 major systems of the body: cardiovascular, digestive, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary and the skin. Although detoxification is an innate, autonomic process, when our bodies become overburdened with toxins, these detoxification systems are often compromised, hindering the body’s natural ability to purge toxins.

Where do toxins come from?

Unfortunately, we live in a world inundated with toxins, often times invisible to our human eye. Some toxins come from our external environment (exogenous toxins) in the form of heavy metals, pesticides & insecticides, or chemicals from cosmetics and household cleaning Products. Other toxins form inside our body (endogenous toxins) as byproducts of poor dietary choices and immune challenges. Because many of us are faced with such a toxic overload, periodic detoxification can be of great benefit for overall health.

How do I know if I’m in need of a detox?

Common signs and symptoms of toxic overload can include fatigue, difficulty sleeping, indigestion, cravings, weight gain, join pain, and brain fog. If you experience these symptoms you may find relief from detoxification.

OK, I’m ready for a detox! How do I get started?

There is no shortage of detoxification plans available, however not all of them are rooted in nutritional wisdom and an understanding of the body’s synergistic functions. Additionally, it is imperative that all elimination pathways are open and properly functioning before attempting a detox plan. This means if you’re unable to sweat or are not having daily bowel movements, your body is not ready to begin a detox. Attempting a detox prior to supporting the detoxification pathways can release toxins into the body with no way to escape and result in a healing crisis, exacerbating many of the initial symptoms. For this reason, it is wise to seek out the guidance of a nutritional practitioner prior to beginning any kind of detoxification protocol.

For more information on how to support your body’s natural methods of detoxification with whole food nutrition, join us January 7th at 6pm to find our more. Can’t make it? Reach out to us at Crossroads Family Chiropractic (314-439-0777)! We would love to guide you through the process!

Oh Come, Let Us Adore Him

I love Advent. I love the Christmas season. I love the traditions and the gift giving and the smiling! Smiling is my favorite!!! Okay, sorry, I just got finished watching Elf and decorating the Christmas tree with my family, so I am feeling all the feels!! But seriously, I do love the anticipation that our holiday season brings.

I am also keenly aware that this season has the ability to bring crazy busy schedules, too much sugar and alcohol, family drama, and many other stressors; chemical, physical and emotional. Yet, as I look forward to the next few weeks, I am reminded to slow down and take small daily steps to maintain normal. To continue to read my Bible daily, to move my body daily, to appreciate the relationships I have, and enjoy spending time picking out thoughtful gifts for those in my life. I am holding onto the mindset that I “get to” do all of these things. May we be able to worship HIM in the busyness of this wonder-ful season.

Leader: As we prepare our house for
the coming Christmas season, we would
also prepare our hearts for the returning Christ.

People: You came once for your people,
O Lord, and you will come for us again.

Though there was no room at the inn
to receive you upon your first arrival,
We would prepare you room
here in our hearts
and here in our home,
Lord Christ.

As we decorate and celebrate, we do so
to mark the memory of your redemptive
movement into our broken world, O God.

Our glittering ornaments and
Christmas trees,
Our festive carols, our sumptuous feasts –
By these small tokens we affirm
That something amazing has happened
in time and space

that God, on a particular night,
in a particular place, so many years ago,
was born to us, an infant King,
our Prince of Peace.

Our wreaths and ribbons and colored
lights, our giving of gifts, our parties with
friends – these have never been ends in
themselves.
They are but small ways in which
we repeat that sounding joy first
proclaimed by angels int he skies near
Bethlehem.

In view of such great tidings of love
announced to us, and to all people,
how can we not be moved to praise and
celebration in this Christmas season?
As we decorate our tree, and as we
feast and laugh and sing together,
we are rehearsing our coming joy!
We are making ready to receive the one
who has already,with open arms,
received us!
We would prepare you room
here in our hearts
and here in our home,
Lord Christ.

Now we celebrate your first coming,
Immanuel, even as we long for your
return.
O Prince of Peace, our elder brother,
return soon. We miss you so!

Amen.

Counting vs. Resting

“Infinity divided by infinity is infinity.”
– Father Richard Rohr

Recently, during my prayer time, God revealed to me that I have a discontent heart. WHAT?! But I am grateful! I know I have it good. We have a roof over our head, we have healthy kids, we have jobs that we love and enjoy, we have a solid marriage. How am I discontent?!?

So I sat. I stopped focusing on my work to do list. I slowed down the family social calendar. I took a break from looking at Facebook. I wanted to hear what God was saying, so I minimized the distractions.

And I began to hear him loud and clear.

Proverbs 4: 25-27 – The Passion Translation

Set your gaze on the path before you.
With fixed purpose, looking straight ahead, ignore life’s distractions.

Watch where you’re going!

Stick to the path of truth, and the road will be safe and smooth before you.

Don’t allow yourself to be sidetracked for even a moment or take the detour that leads to

darkness.

Proverbs 13: 25 – The Passion Translation

The lovers of God will have more than enough,
But the wicked will always lack what they crave.

Even though I know deep down that I am blessed and that I have enough, I keep pushing for more. To do enough with my kids. To give enough. To build my business enough. To pray enough. To work toward seeing the next person receive healing in our office. Yet, in my doing, I forget to rest fully in all of the moments that I am experiencing.

And I know that I am not alone. It is a common struggle. To be present, to rest, to receive the moment, the day, the situation before us with a heart of gratitude and worship. By resting, we live a Proverbs 4 life. We are able to be aware of our surroundings, our cravings. Our steps are more careful. We notice those around us. Our hearts become open to help, to serve, to live life with those around us.

The world is going to bombard us these next weeks to continually check what we have, what we need, what we have left to accomplish on our to-do lists. However, as we count what we have or don’t have, we begin to count what others have and quickly fall into a comparison, and then envy, jealousy, and the circle to keep doing and accumulating begins to promote itself over and over.

May we remember that in God’s greatness and goodness we lack nothing, and need not try to earn love from Him. As we walk toward the holidays, let’s protect our hearts against counting and begin resting in God’s infinite love and provision.

Finding Hope Through Loss; A Father’s Perspective

I’m a modern guy.  For the most part I understand the latest gadgets, trends, and fashion.  Sometimes I even impress my kids with knowledge of current music and media or know when to LOL in a text message.  Even before we built our family, I was aware of the differences between how men and women faced grief and loss.  Men tend to turn inward and just muscle thru it.  Get back to work, or find a new hobby, or do whatever seems to distract from the cause of the grief and sooner or later it will pass.  Women, in general, work thru loss as a process of steps gradually bringing normalcy back thru emotion, discussion, reasoning, nurturing and finally the “new normal”.  The new normal may or may not look the same as the old normal, but it is the result of the process.

My wife and I, for the most part recognize this difference in our grieving process and meet each other somewhere in the middle.  Sometimes she gets a little closer to my recovery steps, and sometimes I move closer to hers.  We have always been able to talk with each other, or just be silent and present if that is the way the spirit moves us.  Our struggle with infertility and the story of our first non-successful adoption attempt challenged even our great partnership. First, there were the operations to take some of the physical issues out of the equation.  Then, there were the daily injections I gave her to make fertilization more likely.  Then there is the money aspect (maybe this is more a guy part of the story).  How may times do we try and fail before we change trains to a different destination?  I don’t remember how many times the monthly cycle came around to prove our efforts futile before we finally stopped, but it was several years’ worth.

Then we moved to adoption.  We worked the program for a couple of years before we got the call.  A mother wanted to place her child with us.  The journey began again, and the pregnancy was a rocky one.  Not for the child, but for the relationship between us and the mother.  It just wasn’t going to happen.  In what felt like nothing short of the loss of a child, we ended the relationship with the mother.  We felt the full weight of grief, complete with an empty nursery and future grandparents to notify.  No matter how different a father or mother deals with loss, there is no escaping the roller coaster of emotions, and no grieving process will lessen that experience.  For us, the solution was not to get back to work or spend time with close friends.  We completely separated from our regular routine and took valuable time off.  We got away, and just enjoyed our own company.  We talked, we cried, we laughed, we didn’t judge or spend too much time playing the what-if game.  There was no fault, just a pause before a new plan began.

We grieved together, and apart for a few weeks until the next call came from another prospective mother.  This is a story with a happy ending.  Three wonderful kids, and all the challenges of parenthood did come along, and rather quickly.  But that is a story for another time.

A special thanks to Geoff Godwin, husband of Wendy Godwin, for sharing his perspective, through this beautiful article, on the journey through loss and adoption.

Crossing the Finish Line

Friends, you made it 21 days!! I’m SO PROUD OF YOU!! You really can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you!

Today, remember what you’ve learned. Remember the tools you’ve been given. Take a moment to rest and give thanks to the Lord, for truly, HE IS GOOD!

Perhaps revisit some information that stood out to you. Take some screenshots or notes (remember, this content is only available on this page until October 8!). If you feel anxious, afraid, or offended about anything, remember, “Lord, bind my flesh. Peace. Breathe.”

The purpose of this fast was to draw us closer to Jesus while bringing truth and awareness to our bodies and to the serious health issues we’re facing today. Our goal was to ultimately lead you into more freedom by pointing you to Jesus in ALL things.

Imagine the revival that we can spark as we continue to say NO! to the things that have the potential to destroy our freedom and reduce us back to slavery. I pray that it begins right here, right now, with us!

Assess the progress you made (or didn’t make) in the last 3 weeks.
What did the Lord show or teach you?
What is your body trying to tell you?
Is your spit test still positive?
Do you still have a white coating on your tongue?
How are your bowel movements?
How’s your energy and mental clarity?
Do you have any lingering or new symptoms?

If you feel significantly better, ask the Lord if this means there are new lifestyle habits that would benefit you to persevere with.

If you try adding in new foods:
Start with gluten-free grains or lower glycemic/slower burning carbohydrate foods like:

  • sprouted or brown/black/wild rice
  • quinoa
  • sweet potatoes
  • berries
  • grapefruit
  • melons, etc.

I recommend adding them one at a time to see if any of your old symptoms come back. If you still feel well, continue adding whole foods back into your diet, paying attention to your body’s response much like we do when we transition a baby onto solid foods.

Listen to your body.
Listen to the Holy Spirit.
Exercise discernment.
Reintroducing even natural sugars, starches, or grains may send you back to dis-ease. Ask the Lord what the next steps and season looks like for YOU. Ask him if there’s anything that is “permissible,” but not (yet) beneficial in this season of your life.

If you still feel sick, have dis-ease, or you’re battling chronic disease, ask God to lead you to the help you need. I highly encourage you to continue fasting from sugars & grains or at least continue with a modified gluten-free, lower carb/glycemic version of this fast until you find a health care provider who can customize a plan for you.

Ask the Lord to help you find a doctor whose intentions are truly to help set you free, get off medications (where possible), restore function to your capable body, and get you back to the abundant life!

Trust God for the healing, provision, strength, ability, perseverance, and resources you will need. FAITH, HOPE & LOVE will conquer all your fears and doubts!

Remember: Pray about EVERYTHING. Seek FIRST the Kingdom in ALL THINGS. Ask the Lord whether you should do your own research or ask a friend for a referral. Ask Him to bring a name or information to you. He can!

Sugar & Methylation & MTHF-R (Revelation Wellness)

As we approach the final week of the Sugar Fast, I want to say I’M SO PROUD OF YOU!! There are a lot of questions that will be answered as we exercise patience one day at a time, and persevere to the end!

The Lord has been putting PATIENCE on my heart. When our bodies start doing funny things or hurting or changing, we have a tendency to panic. If we are feeling “panicked” or want all the answers immediately or feel frustrated in the waiting,  this is a good sign to breathe.

Remember, you signed up for a fast, not a diet or doctor’s appointment, so there are many things you will have to seek Dr. Jesus for. This will be uncomfortable for some people. We are praying for breakthrough & revelation!

Also remember, not everything we are teaching or suggesting will apply to every single one of us! Again, this is the reason we continue to point you to the Lord for wisdom & personal discernment & revelation. While this may be uncomfortable, it is for each of our good & God’s glory. We are learning to turn away from asking people, social media, the internet, etc… and seeking Jesus first and in ALL things. He will calm the storm. He will lead you. He will strengthen you and lead you in the discomfort. Also, the final day of content & Facebook Live teachings with Alisa and I will advise you on how to self-assess and come off the fast.

If you are feeling antsy, like you must have the answers right now, this could be a “symptom” that we may need to ask God for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit. In our flesh, we can become impatient. But in Christ, as we “walk in the Spirit,” we grow in PATIENCE. Remember, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ultimately, God can and will show you individually how to proceed after these 21 days . Give Him the space and a chance to speak to you in a new way.

Now, on to today’s teaching.

People with one or more MTHF-R gene variants need to support their body’s methylation cycle throughout life with organic, whole foods, folate-rich foods, regular cleansing. Often they also need to supplement, at minimum, with methylfolate or folinic acid (Vitamin B9), while avoiding folic acid, which is the synthetic, man-made version of Vitamin B9.

Both the C677T and A1298C MTHF-R gene variants have strong association with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down’s syndrome, Spina bifida, lip and tongue ties, cleft palates, and other “midline” and neural tube birth defects in children due to the improper assimilation of folate (and the inability to utilize folic acid, which was the most common source of Vitamin B9 in prenatal vitamins until recently).

The person with a C677T MTHF-R gene variant is more likely to have elevated homocysteine levels on bloodwork, which is often associated with inflammation, heart/cardiovascular disease, a history of blood clots, and/or high cholesterol that resists change even with the proper diet. Statin drugs are not the answer for these people.

The person with A1298C is more likely to present with autoimmune disease (Hashimoto’s, Lupus, food allergies, etc), brain fog, mental health struggles (ie: depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s or dementia), hormone problems (endometriosis, estrogen dominance, severe PMS, difficult menopause), fibromyalgia, infertility, miscarriages, pregnancy complications, and postpartum depression. Some other signs that point to a malfunctioning methylation cycle are histamine intolerance, poor metabolism, insomnia, anxiety or long health history of symptoms that Doctors haven’t been able to figure out.

Having one (or more) of these genetic variations is a key factor in almost every patient I’ve worked with who has any significant, chronic health struggles. Problems arise when methylation is happening slower (or faster!) than it should be. The methylation cycle slows down when it doesn’t have enough methyl-supportive nutrients and speeds up when it has too many.

A small percentage of people with MTHF-R are over-methylators (like me!), and they will feel worse if they take methylfolate.  Some signs that you are over-methylating are headaches, irritability, racing heart and mind, severe mood swings, body pain or itchy skin. This can also happen after you’ve been supplementing with methyfolate for awhile. Your body is letting you know it now has enough methylation support and it’s time to lower your dose or stop the supplement until you feel yourself going backward again.

There is not a one-size-fits-all “protocol” or “healthy diet” for MTHF-R. However, a grain-free, sugar-free diet is a great, safe place to start.  Under the care of a properly-trained holistic doctor who knows functional nutrition and epigenetics, even patients with the most severe diseases and diagnoses can improve and heal when you effectively support the methylation cycle and address other root causes. A sick body needs to be detoxified and nourished with the proper methylation support, targeted herbs and supplements, and a healthy diet and lifestyle in order to heal. So if this describes YOU, you are on your way to better health. Knowledge is power! We can’t change our genes, but we can absolutely change their expression!

Sugar and the Thyroid

Several within our community are spending 21 days fasting from Sugar, a challenge presented by Revelation Wellness. This article is brought to you by Dr. Jana Joshu Grimm as a part of the 21 Day Sugar Fast Challenge. Dr. Jana writes,

“An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, with thyroid medications among the most prescribed drugs in the U.S.  It is now believed that 90-97% of those diagnosed with hypothyroidism in the U.S. actually have Hashimoto’s, which has an autoimmune component to it.

When you have a thyroid disorder that persists regardless of your medication, it’s likely autoimmune related. The pain and symptoms continue despite your medication because none of the thyroid replacement medications block the T cell assault. They just replace absent thyroid hormones, so your T cells (your immune system) are still reacting full force and trying to kill thyroid tissue in your body. Even if you have a thyroidectomy, the T cells will kill other tissues in your body where the reaction takes place.

Sugar feeds the “bad guys” and interferes with thyroid and liver function, which inhibits the conversion of T4 to T3 (active thyroid hormone). Furthermore, when our bodies are toxic and our livers are congested, they cannot detoxify properly, produce enzymes to break down food, fight inflammation, or use the sun’s energy to produce Vitamin D, no matter how much time you spend outside. Without sufficient Vitamin D, you cannot convert T4 to T3.

Finally, it’s important to know many cases of thyroid disease are overlooked and misdiagnosed as depression, etc. I personally use muscle testing and have found it to be incredibly effective in my practice for finding and resolving overlooked thyroid problems and the root cause. You may get better results with a truly comprehensive Thyroid Panel, but please do not ignore your symptoms even if bloodwork is inconclusive. Remember, >90% of thyroid problems are actually an immune and gut problem.

So, in short:

Sugar = Gut inflammation = Poor liver function = Hormone imbalance = Brain inflammation

Symptoms of thyroid disorder can include but are not limited to:

  • Weight gain
  • Brain fog
  • Body aches
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Cry easily
  • Lack of motivation or ambition
  • Digestion problems (bloating, gas, constipation, etc)
  • Dry skin
  • Ringing in ears
  • Low libido
  • Irregular and/or heavy menstrual cycles
  • Infertility
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Mood swings
  • Neuropathy and other nerve pain

5 Do’s and Don’ts of Fasting

A Mind, Body, Spirit Teaching by Alisa Keeton
(all quotes are from Alisa, unless otherwise noted)

What is your perspective on fasting?

Fasting Defined: Willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink or both.
“Pay attention to your heart, to your life, to what you’re feeling, because it’s carving out
the will of your life.”

Most People Fast:
● In Sleep: from 8-12 hours each night
● Blood Tests: A 12 hour fast can be required to tell the chemistry of what’s going
on in the body (returns the body to its baseline)
● Surgery

Physical Benefits:
● Insulin levels drop (can reset to baseline)
● Reduces inflammation
● Human Growth Hormone increases
● Cellular repair can increase
● Helps our own gene expression (get back to the true you)

Popular Fasting: Intermittent Fasting
● It does work for weight loss because it does reduce calorie intake
● Metabolism increases at first, but then will decrease
● Is it sustainable?

“We aren’t meant to live in a lull. We are meant to nourish ourselves and have the
energy to go back out into the world.”

“However you lose it is how you have to maintain it.”

Fasting: Turning our Hearts to Something Greater

Biblical Examples:

● Jesus: fasted before His public ministry
● Daniel: fasted before the enemy nation to strengthen himself before the Lord
● David: fasted after he sinned- a time for deep seeking
Matthew 6:33

“God is redeeming and restoring and saving you from whatever it is that drives you to
do the things you don’t want to do and that’s what fasting truly has benefit and power
for.”
Isaiah 58:3

Ask yourself: “What is it I want out of this fast?”

Isaiah 58:6-9
“Fasting is all about humbling ourselves before God to break the yokes that weigh us
down to hang our heads in defeat.”

● We are meant to go higher in love
● Come higher—> Lift your head
● Fasting takes us there
5 Do’s and Don’ts

Do:
● Get your head up and get a bigger perspective (make it about Love)
● Remember you’re a whole person
● Know your why
● Humble yourself (expect to learn- read the Word; ask the Lord: “show me,
me”)
● Know when pride has taken the wheel

Don’t:
● Do it just for weight loss
● Think that you can manipulate God
● Expect this to be a lifestyle
● Fall into bondage
● Forget your joy- being certain that God is doing something!
